Common questions about therapy

  • For now, all sessions remain virtual (phone or video) with no plans to return in-person.

  • Research shows that teletherapy can be just as effective, however this is definitely a personal preference. Some clients enjoy the flexibility, convenience, and privacy of meeting in their room (... as well as being able to show me personal items or updates from time to time). Others will prefer the ritual of attending an in-person session with their therapist.

  • We meet on Zoom for best video quality. The link is included in your automated appointment reminders.

  • A standard session is scheduled for 50 minutes. Through the online schedule, you will have the choice to book 80-minutes if you feel that more time is beneficial. Additionally, you are able to schedule two back to back 50-minute sessions, as needed.

  • It’s important to me that you have the freedom and power to notice the pace that feels beneficial for you. For this purpose, there is no requirement to commit to a day of the week, time of day, or cadence.

Apart from what feels beneficial, I understand that we live in a reality where finances and time can be limited. For all these reasons, the choice is yours.

It may take time to identify what pace feels beneficial. I can provide guidance during our phone consult and early stages of therapy.

  • This is a personal question that depends on your goals for therapy.

Some clients experience a sense of relief in sharing their story after a handful of sessions, however I have observed that true enduring change can be a long-term process.

  • 50 Minutes: $180+HST

    80 Minutes: $270+HST

I accept credit card (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX) and Interac e-transfers. During your first session, we will add a credit card to your account.

  • Yes, I work with a limited number of sliding scale clients. Please let me know during the consult that you are in financial need and I will advise on availability.

Sliding Scale for 50-Minute session: $160+HST

  • There is a 24-hour cancellation period. A cancellation fee is charged as follows:

    • 1st Occurrence of Late-Canceling: No Fee.
    • 2nd Occurrence of Late-Canceling: 50% of session rate.
    • 3rd Occurrence and beyond for Late-Canceling: 100% full session rate.

I understand that life can be unpredictable and unplanned. I’ve created this cancellation policy to build-in flexibility and understanding that can be applied in an equitable manner across all clients.

  • At this time, the majority of insurers do not have a platform that is enabled for Registered Psychotherapists to direct bill. After our session, you will be issued a receipt that includes all the necessary information required to submit a claim with your insurer.

  • There is no blanket answer; it depends on whether your employer/school has chosen to include my services in their benefit package, just as they would have made considerations for orthodontics, teeth whitening, massage therapy etc…

Before our first session, I recommend reaching out to your insurer directly to confirm whether my services are eligible for reimbursement. I prefer eliminating any un-welcomed surprises! To do that, you can provide the insurer with the following information:

Melody Phu, Registered Psychotherapist, CRPO License #009279.

  • In Ontario, Canada, therapists who hold the title “Registered Psychotherapists” are required to collect and remit HST (13%) for their services because they are not included in the list of exemptions.

Psychotherapy services can be legally provided by other types of health practitioners, such as physicians, registered social workers, and psychologists (and more). If you are consulting with other therapists, I recommend asking them to confirm what you can expect regarding tax.
